Fossil concretions

The microCT analysis revealed a considerable number of fossil concretions of U. maracoani, with both males and females likely sharing the same burrow. This is the first fossil record of a male fiddler crab with a female inside a burrow, where mating usually takes place. This mating style is common to almost all extant American fiddler crabs.

Other concretions in the same outcrops that contain abundant mollusk and crustacea fossils are evidence that plant remains were fluvially transported into a marine basin. Fossiliferous concretions commonly show zoning, comprising an inner region of progressive precipitation where calcite cement developed as a concentric halo around the organic ...All over the world, spectacular fossils have frequently been found preserved inside solid, roughly spherical rocks called "concretions." From geologists to casual observers, many have wondered why these hardened masses of carbonate formed around dead organisms, with round shapes and sharp boundaries with the surrounding material, typically in marine mud and mudstone.

Phanerozoic marine fossil record' J. John Sepkoski, Jr. Abstract.-Data on numbers of marine families within 91 metazoan classes known from the Phanerozoic fossil record are analyzed. Mazon Creek Fossil Flora. The Mazon Creek fossil deposit extends over a wide area of northeastern Illinois. The fossils are best known from concretions or nodules of siderite, an iron carbonate mineral, which generally must be fractured to expose a plant or animal fossil within. These nodules occur in a geological unit known as the Francis ...Concretions can also form by building up of successive layers of material around a nucleus (sand grain, pebble, mineral crystal, fossil or human-made object). Ground water with dissolved iron, silicon, calcium or other chemicals will often drop these as iron oxide, calcium carbonate or silica solids when chemical conditions change, adding them ... …
