History. Kansas State Men’s Crew was founded by Don Rose in 1963. Rose had been a Wisconsin coxswain and had coached at Princeton and Columbia. He came back to Manhattan and founded the Men’s Crew as the first rowing program in the Midwest. In 1974, the Women’s Crew was founded, and the Junior (high school) crew followed in 1986. The schedule includes four away races and three to be hosted by the Jayhawks between their home sites in Lawrence and Kansas City. Completed in January of 2009, the Kansas Rowing Boathouse sits near the Kansas River in Lawrence’s Burcham Park. The 14,000 square foot facility was dedicated on February 28, 2009.Built to withstand a flood event of eight feet, the boathouse can house 65 boats at a time in the lower level storage area.
