Depends on the map, extinction and gen its far easier to just farm red crystals in volcano or element veins (best maps to craft tek). Metal tools are the only things that can harvest Element Veins, so using a Mantis with high melee with a metal pick is probably your best bet. Though, I’m not sure if pick or hatchet is better.
