These heads with a flat top piston will come in around 9.3 to 1 compression. Try a Comp Cam Extreme Energy 268 or 274 cam and a Edlebrock Performer RPM intake with a Holley 750 carb. The 638 block was used mostly for light truck applications. it is not the LT-1 reverse cooled deal, so you need regular 1st gen style heads, stock or aftermarket. You'll have to do more research on the flat tappet into a roller block....I've never gone backwards like that.

Remember that the '461X heads were used in 1961, 1962 and 1963 with valve sizes 1.94/1.50 only. The revised 461 heads were available starting in 1964 models with either 1.94/1.50 or 2.02/1.60 valves, depending on application. I used an Alexparts valve spring kit to accommodate the higher lift cam. Alexparts advertises that this spring kit can support up to .550 inch lift, so I figured I was safe.Are you thinking of the 882 heads vs. the 624 SMOG era heads? which were lightened / thinned versions of the 882 heads based upon what I've heard...
