A 400 at .40 over is really on the edge of the envelope if you ask me. .30 over is where I choose to call my "safe limit". The thing you have to consider is that you don't oversize an engine for a power gain really, the amount of gain is minimal. You oversize it to recondition the bore so it is effectively "new" again.The motor is a '67 396, with 206 heads (96-97cc) and stock valves (2.06/1.72") and I didn't run into any valve clearance issues. cam is a comp cams grind, 226/234 at .050, 270/278 adv, .544/.564 int/ext on 111 lsa. It is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY that you could ever notice the difference between an equally built 408 vs 414. Also, it is VERY PROBABLE that any 396 will go to .090 over safely. Thus, you could use .060 over 402 pistons in a .090 over 396.
