There are a lot of variables and it would be very time consuming, given the lengthy time between freighter battle spawns, to actually test what made this work. I never gathered my "free first freighter" while playing. I didnt even know that was a thing and just avoided the freighter battles. What no one has mentioned yet is the tech upgrades you get from derelict freighter missions are class locked by system.
