Shawn demonstrating how to ethically harvest Osha root without taking the whole plant. We spent the day learning about Shawn's history with Osha, the work he's done studying bear's use of Osha, and how after many years he has finally found a way to cultivate Osha (so exciting!). Tamp down soil firmly around the roots. Water and fertilize. (The use of fertilizer during fall planting is not recommended.) Let water soak in, then finish filling the hole with soil. Mulch with 4-6” of shredded bark, but keep it a few inches away from the base of the plant. Monitor the moisture level of the soil and water when needed. Trim any broken branches or roots. There should be no signs of rot. Do not trim the roots to fit the hole. The hole should be large enough to fit the roots. Place the root portion of your plant in tepid water–one to two hours of soaking for woody plants and 15-20 minutes for perennials and strawberries or asparagus.
