A famous locality for fossil sponges is the Cretaceous Faringdon Sponge Gravels in Faringdon, Oxfordshire in England. An older sponge is the Cambrian Vauxia. Fossil sponges differ in size from one centimeter (0.4 inches) to more than one meter (3.3 feet). The fossil record of sponges is relatively poor, consisting almost entirely of spicules. Nevertheless, all living sponge classes (Demospongia, Calcarea, and Hexactinellida) are known from Cambrian age rocks, and are therefore long-ranging, successful groups despite their anatomical simplicity.
