Yeah nothing impressive will happen with a pistol if you are under 3 or 4 skill. Even at 3 or 4 skill the pistol can still be ineffective. But you'll need to get to what 10 skill anyway, so pistol is probably mid tier, with Rifle being high mid tier skill to effectively use.Veterans also start with 2 levels in Aiming and Reloading (with +100% XP bonuses to both as well), so those skill combined with the Desensitized trait means you can start using firearms effectively much earlier than with other builds. I've been almost exclusively playing on the Raven Creek custom map, which is just downright fantastic.
